The Jurassic Coast is England's
First Natural World Heritage Site
Dorset and East Devon's unique stretch of coastline has joined the ranks of the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon as one of the great wonders of the natural world.
The coastline between Orcombe Point in East Devon and Old Harry Rocks at Swanage in Dorset was awarded World Heritage status in December 2001 because of its outstanding earth scientific interest, representing 185 million years of the earth’s history in its 95 miles. This area of Dorset and East Devon displays not only superb Jurassic rock formations but also older Triassic and younger Cretaceous rocks.
Parts of the coastline are world famous for fossils and new discoveries are constantly being uncovered, including exceptionally well-preserved dinosaurs and dinosaur footprints.
The Jurassic Coast is stunningly beautiful, with an unparalleled range of natural features. The variety of landslides, beaches, bays and cliffs result in a constantly changing landscape, with such spectacular features as Hookenn Landslide, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door. The varying land and seascapes along the coastline support many species of birds and wildlife - puffins and dolphins included!
The World Heritage Coast Hospitality Association (WHCHA) represents accommodation providers, visitor attractions and other hospitality businesses in Dorset and East Devon. Its principal aim is to ensure that visitors to this outstanding area receive a high level of accommodation and other services commensurate with our World Heritage status.
